If Mary and Joseph were in “Bethlehem Township” today, they would hardly recognize the place. They will certainly have no trouble finding a home in the thriving city that is now arguably the crown jewel of Palestine.

Bethlehem is understandably visited by tourists, after all it is the birthplace of Jesus Christ (it is even possible to visit the exact place where he was born). But this beautiful city, full of biblical heritage and wonders, should not be missed. Bethlehem itself is now a predominantly Muslim city where different religions coexist in relative harmony, in stark contrast to the huge, ugly, man-made wall with towers on the border of Bethlehem that prevents anyone from getting between Israel and Palestine travel.

The city is vibrant and has enough tourist attractions to spend at least a day, if not longer. The Manger Square next to the Church of the Nativity is the focal point. On the other side stands the striking Omar Mosque, a sign of Bethlehem’s religious transformation.

If you want to stay in Bethlehem, you can’t live in a hotel stable. There is a range of large hotels to choose from, often cheaper than Jerusalem, as well as smaller resorts with more character.
